Reverend Jacqueline (Jackie) Newsome has dedicated her life to championing the rights and freedoms of those entangled in the American Criminal Legal System. With unwavering faith and a deep commitment to justice, Rev. Jackie continues to inspire change at the intersections of law, theology, and advocacy.

A graduate of New York University, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts in Politics, Rev. Jackie went on to the University of Chicago Law School. There, she excelled as President of the Black Law Students Association and garnered numerous accolades, including the Ann Watson Barber Outstanding Service Award and recognition as a Chicago Women’s Bar Foundation Scholar.

After earning her Juris Doctor, Rev. Jackie expanded her calling by enrolling at Emory University’s Candler School of Theology. It was there that she fully embraced her identity as a social justice preacher and minister. Her groundbreaking thesis, Jesus Loves Guilty People: Making the Case for the Black Church to End Mass Incarceration, urged the Black Church to adopt abolitionist principles to dismantle the prison industrial complex. She also served as President of the Black Student Caucus and contributed to Candler’s Diversity and Inclusion Committee, ensuring institutional accountability to its stated values. Beyond campus, she interned as a minister at Greater Turner Chapel AME Church in Atlanta and Mount Zion AME Church in Decatur, GA, where her pastoral work strengthened communities of faith.

Upon graduating from Candler in 2019, Rev. Jackie brought her passion and expertise to Philadelphia, serving as an Assistant Public Defender for the Defender Association of Philadelphia until 2024. Today, she continues her mission as Assistant Pastor at the First United Methodist Church of Germantown, where she blends her legal and theological skills to empower communities and advocate for systemic change.

A tireless advocate for justice, Rev. Jackie is a committed member of the Philadelphia Reparations Task Force and the Rise Up for Reparations Committee. She actively works to promote just practices that honor and uplift descendants of enslaved Africans. In addition, she remains a licensed attorney across multiple states, volunteering with the Defender Association of Philadelphia and providing legal expertise to underserved populations.

Rev. Jackie is also a sought-after preacher and speaker, known for her powerful messages and fearless commitment to "getting into good trouble" for the sake of justice. Her work continues to leave a profound and lasting impact on the church, her community, and the broader movement for liberation.
